Week 8 (3/23/2012) Spring 2012

Week 8 (3/23/2012) Spring 2012

With the spring like weather, I always wonder whether students will turn up for lectures and talks in a room (when staying outside is heavenly). Still, many students (certainly not all) flocked to RCOS talk on Friday. They had the pleasure of listening to some outstanding presentations.

This week we had three talks:

1) Jorel Lalicki, Monica Kosciuk - PICTOSS http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/pictoss/

2) Matthew McMullen, Amelia Peterson- Open Circuit Sim
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/open-circuit-sim/

3) Jonathan Skurka, Michael Casper and Brendon Ashby - pLANer
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/planer/

Jorel and Monica are developing a simple 3d drawing package whose output (GCode) can be used on Milling Machines. They are making good progress with their python front end code. They are yet to tie the back end code for generating GCode. Jorel has also built his own Milling Machine from scratch and it is very impressive. This project to create plastic sign boards etc is awesome. Their demo looks impressive. (They also showed some of the things (including plastic spirograph likeobject) Jorel's milling machine did)

Matt and Amelia are doing a project on Logic Circuit Simulator. Right now they are working on combinational logic circuits (with a plan to include flip flop circuits). The front end does the gui using python and OpenGL 3.0. The back end does the simulation of the circuit. They are making good progress with both front end and back end. They showed also a demo how their works.

Jonathan, Michael and Brendon are continuing with their pLANer. They have made major changes with database to have atomic operations and to make the database consistent. They have also improved the front end GUI. Another change they have done is to incorporate user logins. Their system will be ready to be used for LAN parties soon.

I was so glad to hear excellent presentations and to end a delightful week this way
