RCOS Spring 2011 Week 1 (1/28/2011)

Spring 2011 - Week 1 (1/28/2011)

RCOS has started its Spring Semester (we should really call it Winter!) semester this Friday. We have an enthusiastic and energetic group of students eager to start contributing to FOSS (Free and Open Source Projects). Our student peers are also eager to help out. We start at a good point and with positive first derivative (speed) and positive second derivative (acceleration). Students are poised to achieve greater heights this spring semester. Hope their enthusiasm is sustained and we do everything to keep their motivations high. Before I go any further, we appreciate the generosity of Sean O'Sullivan Class of 85, who made all these wonderful things possible.

I gave a brief talk laying the ground work and showing different pointers. David Doria (a peer mentor) transformed my slides into spiffy looking ones.

We had three student presentations.

1) Colin Sullivan (peer mentor) talked how to achieve success in a group software project. His group on Concert sound organizer project worked very well. Colin stressed the importance of having a detailed schedule for the success of the project.Colin has a lot of nice advice to share. He is (will be) posting his slides in his blog Slides are here. Colin's talk is here:

2) Peter Hajas (peer mentor) talked about IoS and Git - Peter's talk is full of energy and lots of nice things to say about iOs and Git. Peter also mentioed about his Mobile Notifier project done last semester. Peter's talk is here:

3) Nate Stedman gave a talk about his new dashboard (observatory) system (with help from Tim Horton, Colin Sullivan and Joe Dougherty). Nate also talked about different build systems. Nate's talk is here:

Nate, Peter and Colin emphasized the importance of pushing the code and making well written documentation and blogs. There may be big-red-freak-out weekend for RPI Hockey - for us, every week is a big-RCOS-freak-out week.

Good Luck to all of you and if you need any help/advice please do not hesitate to email me!
