8th week of Spring 2011 (3/25/2011)

The first week of Spring was not much of a spring weather at Troy. However weather has zero effect on the progress of RCOS projects. We had five great presentations this week.

We had talks and demos by

4) Josh Komoroske Tag System http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/tag/

5)Evan Minto- Smart Guitar Chords http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/smart-guitar-chords/

As usual Peter gave a fantastic about his accomplishments with MobileNotifier3 and his progress with his new project on Widge. Peter has been doing great things - His MobileNotifier has been downloaded more than 175,000 times. His talk slides are here.

Zach and Joe L have completely rewritten the back end - The back end is more structured now. Zach is rewriting the front end with css and jQuery. They have been make a steady and very good progress. Their talk slides may be found here.

Universal batch converter group is doing final touches to their software - packaging, more testing and improving the interface and some functionality.

Josh who is doing a RCOS project TAG which tags the files and makes the file search task faster and more efficient. He has his system working and gave a very nice demo.
(This is separate from file system)

His talk may be found here

Finally Evan gave his talk Smart Guitar Chords. Evan is a guitar player and a composer. He is building a system he will certainly use. He is building it with qT and C++ His talk may be found here

Again I heard very nice talks and I learned a great deal. Students asked interesting questions to further understand their projects. I wish more faculty members share this joy!

Week 7 Spring 2011 (3/11/2011)

Week 7 (3/11/2011)

We are approaching the half way point of the spring semester. With the spring break being next week, and IPad launching this Friday, our seminar was attended by the die-hards! We have a good group of attentive listeners. Continuing our last weeks trend, no laptops were opened during the talks.

We had six talks this week.
1) Deon Robinson - Android Gaming http://appmunki.com/andengineblog

2) Thomas Buttner - LaForge http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/laforge/

3) Brendan A, Andrew B - PLANner http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/planer/
4) Beth T and Bet W -ScoreBoard http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/scoreboard/

5) Nate Stedman-Ease http://git.gnome.org/browse/ease http://nate.xen.prgmr.com/

6) Ben Shippe - Jumpstart http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/jumpstart/

These are their first presentations - Considering that the projects are doing well. Since RCOS is going to go one notch up, we all have to push harder and accomplish greater things (such as pushing code, documentation, blogging etc). Our lead peer mentor is actively helping this efforts.

Deon has been coding examples to understand the Andengine , an open source gaming engine (using open GL) fr Androids. Deon has developed some expertise. He is doing more this semester.

His slides may be foind here.

2) Tom Buttner is developing an application that will help disk jockeys in radio station to keep track of play lists. He is using musicDNS and picard and writing a wrapper. His slides may be found here

3) Andrew presented pLANner a game scheduling project for Rensselaer Gaming Association. They are developing web applications including mobiles for easily maintaining the schedules and scores (distributed). They accomplshed some code development during hackathon with facebook. They are using twilio for messaging.

Eventually they want to make a facebook applciation. They are still learning Python nd Django. Their slides may be found here.

5) Nate talked about development of Ease. Currently he is planning to port his sytem to python. Since Nate is also involved with Observatory, he is not able to develop much time to Ease. But he hopes to get this done in two weeks. Knowing it is Nate, I tend to believe it! His slides may be found here.

6) Ben gave his presentation on his accomplishments with Jumpstart. He was able to complete most of SMTP issues and he is well on to his way making a script to do the installation. His talk slides may be found here:

Please push your code and blogs. By doing a great with your project, make RCOS and you proud!

Week 5.285714 Spring 2011 Videos

Week 5.285714 Spring 2011:

I am indeed very fortunate to work with a wonderful group of cooperative RCOS students (to cite for example Tim Horton, an unassuming but an extremely helpful person - who takes video of all presentations, post it in youtube - all for helping others and for helping RCOS). The number of students attending and offering help during Sunday office hours are on an exponential trend (2,4,8,...)

Thanks Tim for your help!

Here are the videos of last weeks presentations. (Tim's youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/hortont424

The talks are by

1) Flick by Asher and Tor

2) Andrew on Small Scale Open Source

3) Alex. Brendon and Austin on Mobile Shuttle Tracker

4) Colin, Adam and Amy on Concert

5) Alex, Jon and Mike on Anywhere Sync and a possible new project

6) Jerry on RossNet Traffic Model

Please enjoy the videos - More importantly participate and contribute to FOSS efforts and get involved with RCOS in any way possible. The website for RCOS is http://rcos.rpi.edu Come to talks (Fridays in JEC 3117 at 4:00 pm), office hours ( Lally 102 Sundays 2-5:00 pm) - Particpate and Contribute
