Week 8 (3/23/2012) Spring 2012

Week 8 (3/23/2012) Spring 2012

With the spring like weather, I always wonder whether students will turn up for lectures and talks in a room (when staying outside is heavenly). Still, many students (certainly not all) flocked to RCOS talk on Friday. They had the pleasure of listening to some outstanding presentations.

This week we had three talks:

1) Jorel Lalicki, Monica Kosciuk - PICTOSS http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/pictoss/

2) Matthew McMullen, Amelia Peterson- Open Circuit Sim
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/open-circuit-sim/

3) Jonathan Skurka, Michael Casper and Brendon Ashby - pLANer
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/planer/

Jorel and Monica are developing a simple 3d drawing package whose output (GCode) can be used on Milling Machines. They are making good progress with their python front end code. They are yet to tie the back end code for generating GCode. Jorel has also built his own Milling Machine from scratch and it is very impressive. This project to create plastic sign boards etc is awesome. Their demo looks impressive. (They also showed some of the things (including plastic spirograph likeobject) Jorel's milling machine did)

Matt and Amelia are doing a project on Logic Circuit Simulator. Right now they are working on combinational logic circuits (with a plan to include flip flop circuits). The front end does the gui using python and OpenGL 3.0. The back end does the simulation of the circuit. They are making good progress with both front end and back end. They showed also a demo how their works.

Jonathan, Michael and Brendon are continuing with their pLANer. They have made major changes with database to have atomic operations and to make the database consistent. They have also improved the front end GUI. Another change they have done is to incorporate user logins. Their system will be ready to be used for LAN parties soon.

I was so glad to hear excellent presentations and to end a delightful week this way

Week 7(3/9/2012) Spring 2012

Week 7(3/9/2012) Spring 2012

With Spring Break looming ahead and with students taking a well deserved break, RCOS students continue to attend our meeting. This not only shows their dedication but also indicates their joy in sharing their wisdom and helping others!

We have three talks this week:

1) Brian Le, Patrick Teague, Alex Freska - Flowur
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/flowur/

2) Jinshen Gong (Jeff Hui) - YACS http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/timetable/

3) Sunil Kunnakat, Brian Barnes - Android Music Sampler
http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/android-music-sampler/

Brian, Patrick and Alex (all freshmen) gave an excellent presentation of their FlowUR - an easy to draw Floawchart. They made very good progress and showed a Demo. Their current system uses Flash (may get changed to Javascript), PHP and a databse. They plan to produce both static and dynamic flowcharts (with zoom), svg, png and print out put. My only wish is that they write more blog posts - this may enable others to learn and use what they have accomplished.

Jinshen and Jeff talked about the improvements/code refactoring of YACS. Jinshen is working on the backends while Jeff is working on the front end. They are getting their system ready for Fall/Summer Registration. Current YACS takes input from ROCS and catalog. They also have a clever display of schedules. So, students watch out for an interesting experience for the Fall/Summer Registration!

Sunil and Brian talked about Anodiod Music Sample - an open source app for quick and easy music-making. They know their project is a bit ambitious and they have a doable schedule They plan to incorporate the existing open source software projects to enable their music program. This group also need to update their blog - for others to learn what they have been doing.

Since two out of three groups have not been updating blogs, I will end this blog with a request:

Please, Pretty please update your blogs - People read and learn from your experiences.

Week 6 (3/2/2012) Spring 2012

(taken from Huffington Post)

Week 6 (3/2/2012) Spring 2012

This week, Chronicle team did a beta test of their project - They videotaped the talks using android and posted in youtube (Thanks Bobby!)

Despite the snow Storm late Wednesday and Thursday, students flocked to RCOS meeting on Friday. We had four fantastic talks by

1) Chris Gizara, Mike Heise, Frank Kotarski - Unmake http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/unmake/

2) Dan Vegeto - Collective Congress http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/collective-congress/

3) Dan Berkowitz, Brian Stauffer - Enstall http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/enstall/

4) Bharath Santhosh,Michael Pomeranz and Samuel Sandeen - Pierce Logic http://rcos.rpi.edu/projects/peirce-logic/

1) Chris, Mike and Frank talked about making the build process very simple - Their project involves converting one makefile to other makefiles (sounds like Convalot - continued!) They gave a compelling reason for their project and I was/am convinced of their project usefulness. The group has been hard at work and share their work load. They even posted their slides before the end of Friday in their blog post. The group gave an excellent demo (part of their software is working). Unake uses XSLT, XML, Perl, and knowledge of CMake. As usual there are many interesting questions and suggestions. Their Talk video is here.

2) Next Dan talked about collective congress in designing websites. Dan's talk was very convincing about democratizing the maintenance and running of websites and organizations. Dan has done a lot of background work and created a API for hs project. Dan is in the process of creating the infrastructure and a client. Dan is planning to use Java as an implementation language. Dan's talk elicited a number of questions and suggestions. Dan wants to test his system with RCOS as a guinea pig - in the process we hope RCOS escapes from the tyrannical dictatorship of Moorthy to a fully democratic organization! :)

Here are his talk video:

3)Dan and Brian gave a whirlwind talk of their project Enstall - an easy to install packaging system - similar to appstore/android market. Intiially their target is RPI students and Windows. Eventually they will include linux and macs. Their project has alread the blessings of doTCIO office at RPI. The client uses coffesscript and the web side uses php. Their talks also prompted a number of questions and suggestions.

Their talk video can be found here:

Finally Bharat, Mike and Samuel gave a nice talk on Pierce Logic - an educational tool for learning proofs in Propositional Logic and First Order Logic (and may be modal logic). All the three have a solid knowledge and background on proof systems and logic (judging from the ease with which they handled the topics). Their system use diagrams to show proofs (cut and join). They have a nice demo of displaying diagrams (using HTML 5) - They plan to use Javascript for implementation. They gave a small demo of the GUI. Students showed their enthusiasm for logic proofs (stemming from using outdated proof systems!) by asking interesting questions

Their talk video can be found here:

What a delightful way to spend a Friday evening listening to young, bright and creative students. I am extremely happy with the progress so far!
